NEWARK, Del. – Delaware posted a 6-1 win over Saint Joseph's in the opener before dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a non-conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph's Wednesday afternoon.
Delaware (12-16) took the lead during the opener in the bottom of the second when Anna Steinmetz led off with a single and scored on a double by Brittney Mendoza. After Ali Davis drove home Steinmetz with a sacrifice fly, Chayanna Gallardo doubled and crossed the plate on a Miranda O'Donald single to give the Blue Hens a three-run advantage.
Mendoza then blasted a home run to leftcenter in the bottom of the fourth, before the Hawks (13-12) got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Sarah Ostaszewski.
Steinmetz belted a homer to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth, and after Mendoza tripled, she scored on an infield single by Davis to close the scoring.
Blue Hen starter Maddi Marsh earned her third win of the year after allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work, while Katie Stahre picked up her first career save with two scoreless frames of relief.
Mendoza finished 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while Steinmetz added two hits and crossed the plate twice.
Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the second game with an RBI double by Ostraszewski in the top of the first, while a run-scoring single by Jancarla Herrera in the second made it a 2-0 game.
O'Donald led off the bottom of the third with a bunt single, and she eventually scored when Halle Kisamore reached on an error to put the Blue Hens on the board. However Saint Joseph's answered with an unearned run in the top of the fourth go back up a pair.
Delaware rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as Reyna de Jesus doubled and Brooke Glanden singled. But Hanna Garber's groundball to the right side hit O'Donald, ending the game.
