How Sweep It Is: Offense Leads Blue Hens Past William & Mary, 9-8

It's a saying that is uttered constantly to young children.
The 2019 University of Delaware baseball team is proving just that as the Blue Hens picked up their fourth straight win and fifth in the past six after powering past William & Mary, 9-8, to finish off a CAA series sweep of the Tribe.
Delaware has now won eight straight games against W&M and sits in fourth place in the league. Dating back to March 15, the Blue Hens are 10-5 and have won six of their past eight games after this weekend's sweep.
"There's no better feeling that to finish off a conference series sweep. I can't say enough about this group right now. They keep fighting, they keep battling and they've stuck with it and now we're starting to see the dividends," head coach Jim Sherman said. "Our offense really had a big day with everybody in the lineup really chipping in and our pitching stepped up when we needed it to today. We have to continue to focus on getting better each step of the way."
Eight different Blue Hens pounded out hits on the day with Kevin Mohollen, Jordan Hutchins, Joseph Carpenter and Austin Colmery all tallying multi-hit performances. Mohollen and Hutchins both scored two runs apiece in the victory.
"We're taking better approaches, really getting good swings on the ball and we're trusting the work that we've put in," Mohollen said. "We all know how hard we've worked and we know it's a process and right now, we feel confident when we go to the plate."
On the mound, Brandon Walter returned a week after taking a line drive off the elbow to throw 6.2 innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs and striking out six. Junior Derek Wakeley came out of the pen to close things down and slammed the door on a William & Mary ninth inning rally for his third save of the year.
"To get Walt back out there and have him throwing after the line drive he took last week was great. He did a good job battling and competing. I can't say enough about the job Wake has done coming out of the pen for us this year. He's just a bulldog and such a tough competitior," Sherman added.
Delaware set the tone from the opening at-bat with Mohollen singling to left and two batters later, Hutchins launched a double off the right field wall to plate the game's first run. After a single by Carpenter, Vinny Vaccone drove in Hutchins to give the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead.
W&M would get a run back in the third and put three up in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Blue Hens would not let that lead last long. Colmery ripped a triple into left to lead off the home half of the fourth and came around to score on a double by Mohollen. Erik Bowren, Hutchins and Carpenter would rip back-to-back-to-back singles to plate two more runs.
An RBI single from Jack Goan and a fielding error allowed Delaware to score two more runs and round a five-run frame and grab a 7-4 advantage.
Zach Lesher would launch an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth and come around to score five pitches later on an RBI single from Colmery that pushed Delaware's lead to 9-4.
As they did all weekend long, the Tribe wouldn't go away, scoring twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth to quickly make it a one-run game, 9-8. Wakeley would manage trouble and with the game-tying run on first, he would come up with a strikeout to close out the victory.
