Mohollen becomes second player in program history to eclipse the 220 career games played mark

NEWARK, Del. –The Delaware baseball team fought back to tie Saturday's season finale twice against the College of Charleston, but ultimately fell, 5-2, at Bob Hannah Stadium in what was the final game for five Blue Hens.

"I can't thank these guys enough for how hard they worked and the commitment they had to our program," said head coach Jim Sherman. "They each showed up every day, took care of their business, and their futures are bright, whether it be on or off the diamond."

Freshman Joey Silan went 7.0 strong for the Blue Hens on the bump and allowed just two runs, one of which was scraped across in the third inning to give Charleston (36-19, 16-8 CAA) the early advantage.

But the Blue Hens battled right back when senior Kevin Mohollen drove home junior Vinny Vaccone in the home half of the third.

Mohollen played in his 220^th career game, making him one of just two players in program history to play in 220-plus career games. He finishes with 242 career hits, good enough for 14^th on Delaware's all-time list.

The Cougars took the lead right back in the next inning, but Silan settled back in to throw scoreless frames over the next three innings.

In the sixth, Delaware tied it again when Mohollen singled to lead off the inning and junior Jack Goan would eventually drive him home with a base hit to make it 2-2.

Freshman Jack Dubecq came on in relief and handled his business in the eighth to keep it tied, but a pair of errors in the ninth allowed Charleston to regain the lead, this time holding on to the final out.

"I give our guys so much credit this season for hanging in after the slow start to be in a position over the final weekend to make the postseason," Sherman said. "It was not an easy year, but these guys never quit and I am so appreciative of that."

A bright future lies ahead for the Blue Hens' leading hitter, freshman Joseph Carpenter, whose 1-for-4 afternoon day kept his average at .300 for the season, while making all 54 starts. Classmate Zach Lesher had a nice afternoon, as well, picking up a pair of hits in the finale.

The previous time Delaware failed to make the CAA Tournament, the Blue Hens came back to win the conference championship in 2017.
