BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Delaware men's soccer team scored two early goals and narrowly missed on some chances in the second half as the Blue Hens battled Northeastern to a 2-2 draw in their Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday night at Parsons Field.
Delaware struck first in the 21st minute when the Blue Hens were awarded a penalty kick following a Huskies foul in the box. Timo Hummrich, who scored two penalty kick goals at Pitt on Monday, fired a rocket in the left side of the net to put the Blue Hens on top.
UD doubled its lead exactly seven minutes later, as after Huskies keeper Noah Abrams mishandled a chip into the box, Alvin Halley stole the loose ball and fed Rex Twum who buried a shot from 12 yards out.
Twum notched his second goal of the season, while Halley recorded the first point of his career.
Northeastern got on the board in the 41st minute when Timothy Ennin slid a pass to Ryan Massoud, who threaded a shot through the legs of UD keeper Renan Thomazo from 18 yards out.
The Huskies then pulled even four and a half minutes into the second half, as Massoud scored on a diving header off a cross from the right side by Dan Munch.
Delaware had a couple of brilliant chances to go back in front later in the half, but Twum fired a shot wide with Huskies goalie Chandler Cree out of position and David Vavrous' shot from six yards out was stopped by a diving Cree.
Hummrich had a free kick in the first overtime period that sailed just over the crossbar, while late in the second session a deflected free ball bounced through the goal mouth but was corralled by Huskies keeper Chandler Cree.
Delaware, which is 4-0-1 in its last five meetings against Northeastern, held an 11-7 shot advantage. The Huskies put four shots on goal to the Blue Hens' three, with Thomazo making a pair of saves in the UD goal.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Boston is a rough place to pick up points in the CAA. We got off to another great start and the lads will be disappointed to have given up the lead. However we responded well, had a great opportunity to close it out but couldn't quite convert. At day's end though, we picked up a critical point which may very well prove invaluable in the CAA playoff run at the end of the season."
