Blue Hens Come up Short in Season-Opener at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A Blue Hens comeback was cut short Saturday afternoon as Delaware fell in its season lid-lifter, 13-11, at Rutgers' SHI Stadium.
Christine Long led the Hens with four goals for her 13th career hat trick while Claire D'Antonio added her fourth career hat trick by posting three goals.
Amelia Kienzle collected her first career points for Delaware and finished the game with one goal and two assists.
Rutgers posted the first goal of the afternoon less than two minutes into the contest before Delaware took the 2-1 advantage within the next four minutes with tallies from Mia DeRuggiero and D'Antonio.
The Scarlet Knights regained the lead midway through the first, but never the Blue Hens never let things get out of reach. Down by five with 17 minutes left in regulation, Delaware rattled off three unanswered goals to come within two at 13-11.
Kate Brewster posted a game-high five ground balls to go along with 13 saves between the pipes.
