Kisamore’s Walkoff Homer Lifts Blue Hens Over Cleveland State, 5-3

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The wins just keep coming for the Blue Hen softball team.
Brittney Mendoza and Halle Kisamore each belted home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Delaware a dramatic 5-3 walkoff win over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon during the final game of the Incarnate Word Cardinal Invitational.
The Blue Hens, who won all five games at the tournament, continue their exceptional run to open the year and are now 9-1, the best start since the program's inaugural season in 1976.
Delaware trailed the Vikings 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Mendoza quickly tied the game by leading off with a homer to leftcenter. One out later Brooke Glanden doubled to right, before Kisamore drilled a walkoff homer down the leftfield line to set off the Blue Hen celebration.
The game started out as a pitchers' duel, and remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Kaelin Ettinger hit a solo home run to put Cleveland State in front. The Blue Hens quickly answered in the bottom half when Glanden delivered a two-run single, driving home Sarah Bessel and Hanna Garber to put UD in front.
The Vikings took the lead back in the top of the sixth on a homer by Courtney Fernette and a pinch hit RBI infield single by Lindsay Ward, before Delaware won it in the seventh.
Sarah Piening earned the victory after firing 1.1 frames of scoreless relief for the Blue Hens, after Kailey Christian allowed three runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Glanden and Bessel each finished 2 for 3 at the plate while Garber, Mendoza, Kisamore and Ali Davis added a hit apiece.
The Blue Hens are back in action next weekend when they play five games at the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles.
