Delaware Splits Two Games At Season-Opening FGCU Kickoff Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Delaware shut out Georgetown, 4-0, before falling to the host Eagles, 4-1, as the Blue Hens opened their 2020 season on Friday on the first day of the FGCU Kickoff Classic.
Delaware struck early during its first game of the day as Sarah Bessel reached on an error in the opening frame, stole second and scored on an RBI double to leftfield by Karolina Flores.
Halle Kisamore and Brittney Mendoza belted consecutive run-scoring triples in the fourth, before Mendoza crossed the plate when Meredith Miller reached on an error to close the scoring.
Blue Hen pitchers Sarah Piening and Emily Winburn made the lead stand up by combining for a six-hit shutout. Piening scattered three hits in four innings of work to earn the victory, while Winburn picked up the save after firing three scoreless frames in her UD debut.
FGCU scored two runs in each of the first two innings and held off Delaware during the Blue Hens' second game of the day. Marissa Mesiemore delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the first, while McKenna Batterton added a two-run single in the second.
Delaware scored its lone run in the top of the fifth when Kailey Christian worked a two-out walk and came around to score on a double to centerfield by Chayanna Gallardo. The Blue Hens put two runners on base with one out in each of the final two frames, but could not push across another run.
