Fairfax, VA - The University of Delaware track & field team competed for the first time in nearly 11 months after the COVID-19 pandemic halted competition last spring, as the Blue Hens kicked off their indoor schedule at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason on Saturday.
"We did okay today. We had some good performances, and the opportunity for our student-athletes to see what they need to work on to get better. Everyone showed promise for better performances later on," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "We look forward to competing again next weekend, and hopefully one or two more competitions to close out the indoor season."
Redshirt freshman Chioma Njoku enjoyed a terrific debut to her college career, as she won the shot put event with a toss of 12.93m, eighth longest in school history. Njoku also set a new Delaware freshman record in the weight throw with a mark of 16.38m, which also secured her an ECAC qualifier and a sixth place ranking in school history.Â
Senior Myrissa McFolling-Young placed second in the shot put with a distance of 12.43m, while senior Kai Starnes was third in the high jump with a height of 1.50m.Â
Sophomore Trinity Tapper finished the day with a pair of second-place finishes, running the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.76 and the 200-meter with a time of 26.11.
Delaware saw three pole vaulters and three long jumpers also place among the top five. In the pole vault competition, Meredith Krieger placed third with a 3.26m mark, Sarah Megivern in fourth with a 3.26m height and Alana Cohen came in fifth with a 3.11m height.
