FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Delaware rowing team headed to Fairfax, Va. Saturday, Nov. 6, to compete in the Head of Occoquan to close out their Fall portion of its 2021-22 schedule.
The regatta saw the Blue Hens suit up for the Varsity Eights and Varsity Fours events.
"We had some uneven results today," said head coach Kevin Gruber. "The varsity eight struggled with rhythm over the back half of the race course and didn't get the send they'd wanted. We will learn from it and move on. The second eight and the fours had solid, aggressive pieces."
Competing in the Varsity Eights was bow #126, consisting of c-Hannah Kirk, 8-Cornelia Meiss, 7-Julia Rothstein, 6-Jessica Dobson, 5-Alli Burns, 4-Tynneqa Jefferies, 3-Rachel Henry, 2-Hannah Towhey, 1-Sloane Matthews, who finished the race in a time of 18:35.87 for a fourth-place finish. Following directly behind with a time of 19:00.97 to capture fifth place was bow #138 (c-Tierney Ellis, 8-Alexia Skor, 7-Hannah Walsh, 6-Madeline Curran, 5-Maddy Singh, 4-Maria Dupnock, 3-Sophia Talley, 2-Delaney Denegar, 1-Lydia Greenwood).
Placing second in the Varsity Fours race was bow #245 with a lineup oc-Amanda Schlosser, 4-Meiss, 3-Rothstein, 2-Dobson and 1-Matthews with a time of 19:39.42. Bow #253 (c-Sydney Ross, 4-Maya Ferrer, 3-Shannon Gibbons, 2-Ava Norton and 1-Alicia Stratman) was the next Blue Hen boat to cross the finish line with at time of 21:09.38, which was good enough for fifth place. Bow #257 (c-Claire Higgins-Hart, 4-Grace Diehl, 3-McKenna Twitchell, 2-Blair Kennedy and 1-Olivia Hollingsworth) took eighth place (21:53.18). Bow #262 (c-Olivia Kelly-Quigley, 4-Stirling North, 3-Meredith Blowman, 2-Elena Sherman, 1-Alexcia Bryant) and bow #263 (c-Megan Hamilton, 4-Hanaa Abdallah, 3-Natalija Penev, 2-Alexis O'Keefe and 1-Emily Hegyi) finished in ninth (22:37.95) and 11th place (22:50.73), respectively.
Gruber added, "Our training now moves on-land for the winter. We'll miss fall rowing but excited to continue finding speed indoors."
