NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware softball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a Grace Hrustich grand slam, to cruise past Coppin State, 15-1 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Diamond.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Brissa Alvarado led off with a double and eventually scored on a passed ball. However Delaware quickly answered in the bottom half when Hanna Garber walked, stole second and scored on a double to leftcenter by Brittney Mendoza.
The Blue Hens then put the game away by scoring 10 runs in the second, as Julz Garber doubled home a pair before her sister Hanna followed with a two-run triple. Mendoza then delivered an RBI single to make it a 6-1 game, while later in the frame Karolina Flores added a run-scoring single of her own. Two batters later Hrustich came up with the bases loaded and belted a pitch over the fence in leftcenter for her first collegiate home run to cap the inning.
Mendoza and Brooke Glanden then hit back to back long homers in the third, before Gillian Zack added a two-run single in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Mendoza led a 15-hit Blue Hen attack by finishing 3 for 3 with three RBI, while Sarah Bessel also added three hits on the day. Lexi Moore finished with a pair of hits, while Hrustich knocked in four with her grand slam.
UD starting pitcher Kailey Christian picked up her first win of the year after allowing one unearned run on two hits in three innings of work, before freshmen Delani Sheehan and Kendall Shank combined for two innings of hitless relief.
