Late Rally in Nightcap Gives Blue Hens Doubleheader Split with Bucknell

NEWARK, Del. – Hanna Garber singled home her sister Julz to give Delaware a walkoff victory in the nightcap as the Blue Hen softball team split a doubleheader with Bucknell Sunday afternoon.
The Bison took the opener, 10-6, before Delaware responded with a 3-2 win in the second game.
The Blue Hens trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the nightcap, before Karolina Flores drilled a home run over the centerfield fence to bring UD even. Julz Garber then led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to leftfield, while Hanna followed with a single to center to give Delaware the win.
Both Garber sisters and Lexi Moore finished with two hits, while Flores and Chayanna Gallardo added one each. Sarah Piening picked up her second win of the year after allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out seven.
Piening gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, before shutting down the Bison the rest of the way. The Blue Hens got on the board in the bottom of the third when Julz Garber singled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Moore, before adding the two late runs.
Bucknell also scored two runs in the top of the first during the opener, but Brooke Glanden doubled home a pair in the bottom half to immediately pull the Blue Hens even. Run-scoring singles by Glanden and Halle Kisamore gave UD a 4-2 lead in the third, but Bucknell answered with a run in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 9-4 advantage.
Gallardo singled home two in the bottom of the sixth, before the Bison tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to close the scoring.
Glanden finished with two hits and three RBI in the game, while Moore also had two hits and Brittney Mendoza scored twice.
