NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware softball team took the opener, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 10-6, as the Blue Hens split their CAA-opening doubleheader with Hofstra on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride struck first during the opener when Devyn Losco delivered an RBI single in the top of the second inning. However Delaware answered in the bottom of the third as Sarah Bessel led off with a walk, advanced to second on a Hanna Garber single, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lexi Moore, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittney Mendoza.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth, when Brooke Glanden belted a pitch over the centerfield fence to put the Blue Hens in front. Emily Winburn then retired Hofstra in order in the seventh to seal the victory.
Winburn allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven in a complete game effort as she improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Pride plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, before tacking on five runs in the second. Delaware scored a run on a Hofstra error in the bottom half, and after the Pride added a run in the top of the third, Halle Kisamore blasted a three-run homer to make it an 8-4 game.
A two-run single by Alexa Corben put Hofstra back up six in the fourth, before Karolina Flores drilled her team-leading third homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth. Chayanna Gallardo hit a sacrifice fly to chase home Grace Rudolph in the seventh, but the Blue Hens would not get closer.
Garber recorded a hit during all seven of her plate appearances on the day to lead the UD offense, while Flores added three hits during the twinbill.
