Towson takes a pair on Saturday
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Towson, falling in the first, 10-2, and the second 7-6.
Â
Game One
The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back, scoring two runs in the first and four in the second inning. However, freshman Dom Velazquez settled in over the next two innings to put up zeroes on the score board.
Â
Freshman Mitchell Balint helped cut into the Towson lead with a solo home run to lead off the third inning and went deep again in the seventh inning to go 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Â
Â
Velazquez would go 5.1 innings, punching out eight batters and allowing five earned runs.
Â
The Blue Hens struck out 11 times and left five on base to fall in the second game of the four-game series.
Â
Game Two
This time it was Delaware striking first as a Towson wild pitch allowed redshirt junior Jordan Hutchins to score, however the Tigers would answer in the bottom of the inning to make it 1-1.
Â
Towson would score three-unanswered before the Blue Hens plated three in the top of the fourth to go in front. Another wild pitch allowed a run to score before Hutchins singled to drive home two and make it 4-3.
Â
Hutchins was 1-for-3 with three RBI with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning that gave Delaware the lead, 6-4.
Â
As they did all afternoon, the Tigers answered, plating three runs in the home half of the sixth for the difference in the game.
Â
Freshman Josh Venti was impressive out of the bullpen, working 2.2 innings while striking out six and allowing only one earned. He struck out the side and stranded two batters in the fifth inning.
Â
Graduate Student Derek Wakeley had another strong appearance in relief, going 2.2 with five strikeouts and no runs.
Â
The Blue Hens and Tigers will close out the series Sunday, with the Blue Hens looking for a split after taking game one Friday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
