NEWARK, Del. – Sarah Piening celebrated her Senior Day by firing a three-hit shutout as the Delaware softball team wrapped up its regular season with an 8-0 win over St. John's Saturday afternoon.
Piening, who was honored in a pregame ceremony along with fellow seniors Meredith Miller, Chayanna Gallardo and Karolina Flores, gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out four during her final appearance at the Delaware Diamond.
The Blue Hens scored twice in the bottom of the first inning when Brooke Glanden drive home a run on a fielder's choice and Flores hit a sacrifice fly to chase home Brittney Mendoza. Hanna Garber then doubled in the second and came around to score on a single by Lexi Moore to make it a 3-0 game.
After a pair of weather delays following the top of the fourth, Delaware added a run in the bottom half when Julz Garber doubled, moved to third on a groundout by Miller and scored on a groundout by Sarah Bessel.
Julz Garber singled home Mendoza in the fifth, before Miller and Hanna Garber each worked bases loaded walks to increase the margin to seven. With two outs in the sixth Flores singled, moved to second on a walk by Gallardo, and scored on a double by Julz Garber to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Julz Garber finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI, while her sister Hanna went 2 for 2 with a double, triple, and two walks.
Delaware returns to action next week when the Blue Hens compete in the five-team, double elimination CAA Tournament on May 12-14 in Harrisonburg, Va.
