TOWSON, Md. – Delaware field hockey (5-9, 3-1 CAA) picked up its third straight Colonial Athletic Association win on the road against Towson (4-9, 0-2) 2-1 in OT on Friday.
"Happy for Delaware field hockey as we pull out an OT win today," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "Proud for the grit and resiliency from the team for staying the course and believing we would close out as winners against a tough playing Towson. "
The game-winning goal was scored by Sian Emslie in the 65th minute. Emslie took the ball away from a Towson defender, sprinted toward the goal, and found the back of the net past the sliding Towson goalkeeper. It was Emslie's second goal of the season.
On the day, the Blue Hens outshot the Tigers 31-10 and had a 17-6 shots-on-goal advantage. It was the most shots in a game for the Blue Hens since Oct. 15, 2017, against Columbia. The Blue Hens had a season-high 12 penalty corners to the Tigers one.
Julia Duffhuis had a season-high eight shots. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had five saves and allowed one goal.
After Towson took a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute of the fourth quarter, the Blue Hens tied it up with a goal from Lia Becker in the 51st minute. It was her second goal of the season. She was assisted by Emma Miller, who collected the first assist of her collegiate career. Becker was able to find Miller's pass through a group of Tiger defenders and was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
The Blue Hens head to Cambridge, Mass. for a non-conference road game against No. 15 Harvard on Sunday, Oct. 16 at noon.
