University Park, Pa. – Cross country headed to the home of the Nittany Lions on Friday to take part in the PSU National Open, the first of two Blue Hens meets this weekend.
In a field of 161 runners featuring 18 different schools, Autumn Sands placed first among Blue Hens runners, finishing the 6K course in 47th place with a time of 21:48.7.
Freshmen Tiffany Herrera and Molly Lashley continued to make their mark in their inaugural campaign, finishing 88th and 91st, respectively. Herrera crossed the finish line with a time of 22:50.7, while Lashley set a personal-best time of 22:52.4.
This meet also marked the season debut of Hannah Lindgren, who completed her first race of 2022 with a time of 23:28.4.
"I thought today was another well-executed race," head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele said. "Our main priority has been utilizing the things that we have been doing off the course, and the girls have been doing that really well. We had Autumn [Sands] who led the charge today, and we had a goal of being a little more confident, and today was a good way of testing ourselves."
Among 18 competitive institutions including West Virginia, Penn State and Villanova, Delaware finished 15th in scoring with a mark of 403, finishing ahead of Temple, Rider and UMBC. West Virginia earned the team title with 65 points, while Penn State placed second with 85. Northeastern rounded out the scoring three with 105 points. West Virginia junior Ceili McCabe earned the individual title with a time of 20:00.8.
"Being in these larger-style races helps us to understand where we are and to be within ourselves," Iyevbele said. "Having control over the way we go about races, like being more conservative in the middle and finishing strong. These races have challenged them in that way."
The Blue Hens head back home for their final regular season meet of the year tomorrow as they Host the Blue Hen Invitational.
