Field Hockey Picks Up Road Win Against Columbia
10/2/2022 3:20:00 PM | Field Hockey
NEW YORK. – Delaware field hockey (3-8) picked up its second straight win against non-conference foe Columbia (2-7) 3-1 on Sunday.
"A good weekend for Delaware field hockey. Our team continues to get better and it shows in their performance and confidence," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "Today we also enjoyed on-field contributions from more players, which allows us to add to our depth-chart. Our team can be proud of themselves going 2-0 this weekend, which should be helpful as we start our preparation for William & Mary on Friday."
The Blue Hens out-shot the Lions 24-8 and had an 11-4 shots on goal advantage. It's the most shots for the Blue Hens this season, and the most since April 16, 2021, against Drexel. Lizzie Gaebel picked up the win. She had two saves.
The Blue Hens struck first with a goal from Julia Duffhuis at the 10th minute of the first quarter off a penalty corner. Berber Bakermans received the inserted pass to set up the Duffhuis shot, and fit the ball in the top right corner of the net. It was Duffhuis' fourth goal of the season, and Bakermans' second assist.
Lisa Kater extended the Blue Hens lead with a goal at the 39th minute. Kater's shot deflected off a Lions defender and found the back of the net. The goal was Kater's second of the season.
After Columbia cut the Blue Hens lead to 2-1 in the fourth quarter, Ashlyn Carr added an insurance goal at the 56th minute. Carr weaved her way around Lions defenders and scored on the low left corner of the net. The goal was Carr's second of the season.
Colonial Athletic Association play continues with a road match against William & Mary on Friday, Oct. 7 from Williamsburg, Va.
