WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Delaware field hockey (4-8, 2-1 CAA) scored two fourth-quarter goals to secure a 3-2 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe No. 20 William & Mary (7-5, 1-1 CAA) on Friday.
"One of the best CAA games I have witnessed in years. Two fantastic teams going at it, lots of back and forward, strong possession, and fights to get into each other circles. All in all a great evening of field hockey under the lights at William & Mary," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "Our team played its best and most complete game of the season. They remained focused and nothing faced them today. We displayed solid Delaware Hockey from start to finish and showed ourselves we can control the tempo the entire game. A big compliment to our player's group, coaching, and support staff for today's teamwork and performance"
With the win, the Blue Hens extend their win streak to three games and pick up their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Tribe out-shot the Blue Hens 14-13, while UD had a 9-8 shots-on-goal advantage. Lizzie Gaebel picked up her fourth win and had six saves.
Julia Duffhuis gave the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the first quarter off a penalty corner. Berber Bakermans received the inserted pass from Ashlyn Carr and passed it off to Duffhuis who found the back of the net. It was Carr's fourth assist, and Bakermans third on the season. The Tribe responded and tied the game with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
After William & Mary took a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Duffhuis tied the game with her second goal off a penalty corner. Lisa Kater and Lia Becker were credited with the assist. Duffhuis' shot hit the stick of the leaping Tribe's goalkeeper and rolled to the back of the net. The two goals were Duffhuis' team-leading fifth and sixth of the season. Kater picked up her third assist.
Noelle Sabbagh scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. After weaving her way through defenders, Becker found a wide-open Sabbagh, who snuck the ball past the diving Tribe goalkeeper, and into the back of the net. It was Sabbagh's fifth goal of the season. Becker picked up her team-leading fourth and fifth assists.
The Blue Hens return to Rullo Stadium to take on non-conference opponent No. 13 Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
