Mason’s 38 Kills Fuels Volleyball Comeback Win At Charleston
10/2/2022 5:21:00 PM | Volleyball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – "Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years" Down two sets, the University of Delaware volleyball team put together the most impressive comeback we have seen this season to capture the five-set thrilling victory (23-25, 25-27, 29-27, 25-21, 15-11) Sunday afternoon over Charleston (7-9, 2-1 CAA) inside TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. Behind another stellar, career-best and new program record 38 kills by Lani Mason, the Blue Hens (9-4, 5-0 CAA) extended their winning streak to eight games and remain one of the three teams left in the CAA that are unbeaten in league play (Towson, Hofstra). The last time Delaware reached an eight-game winning streak was during the 2019 season.
"I'm extremely proud of our resiliency today," said head coach Kimberly Lambert. "We were able to make some adjustments mid-match and execute at key moments. Charleston is an extremely disciplined team and solid in every position. Now, we have to regroup for tomorrow because we know we have to do what we do well."
Attacking at a season-best .556 clip in the deciding set, Delaware finished the afternoon swinging at a rate of .256 compared to Charleston's .212. The Blue Hens led the way in points (98-77), kills (81-66), aces (6-3), blocks (11-8), assists (77-60) and digs (95-73).
The opening two sets remained close as Charleston prevailed by winning by two points (set 1, 25-23; set 2, 27-25).
The Blue Hens never doubted themselves, playing each set with their backs against the wall. Delaware took the 6-3 lead after scoring four-straight points with Mason serving three points. Charleston gained the lead after a 6-1 spurt, 12-11. After the Blue Hens went on a 4-0 run capped by Mason's kill (15-12), the seesaw battle commenced with six ties and one lead change. The scoreboard read 25-all before Eileen Gex connected with Lily Rogers to nail one down as part of the 5-2 Blue Hen run to secure the 29-27 set three win.
Set four proved to be another close one as Charleston took the early 9-7 lead. Again, the Blue Hens remaining calm, cool and collective went on a 5-0 run capped by Kirah Johnson finishing off Rogers' feed, 12-9. Delaware remained in the driver's seat for the remainder of the set, claiming the 25-21 set four win after the Cougars made an attacking error that sent the match into the deciding set.
Momentum was all on Delaware's side heading into the fifth set as the squad has already been in CAA five-set thriller this season. The Blue Hens opened with a 6-3 run that was capped by a trio of Mason kills, including burying her 36th one that would set a new career-high and program record, a record that she just set two weeks ago against Northeastern (Sept. 18-35 kills). Charleston got in as close as one after Claire Campbell's kill, 10-9, before Delaware used a 5-2 run, highlighted by Ezgi Basaranlar dishing out match point and the game winner to Savannah Seemans and Rogers, to capture the 15-11 win.
Along with her 38-kill performance, Mason also set a career-best with 24 digs to post her sixth double-double of the season. Johnson followed with 13 kills and five blocks. Seemans added 12 kills and 12 digs to post her third double-double of the season while Rogers chipped in 11 kills, 19 assists and 17 digs to register her first-career triple-double. Directing the Blue Hen offense alongside Rogers was Basaranlar, who dished out 51 assists to go with nine digs. Gex helped Mason anchor the Blue Hen defense by scooping up 21 digs. Pearce Augier and Lauryn Richardson finished with five and four blocks, respectively.
Anna Smith paced Charleston with 15 kills and nine digs while Gabi Bailey added 13 kills and 12 digs. Emma Appleman and Jasmin Goei dished out 30 and 26 assists, respectively and Tynley Smeltzer had 25 digs.
