Men's Basketball Opens 2022-23 Season Against Wilmington

NEWARK, Del. – Defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion Delaware men's basketball is set to start its 2022-23 campaign against the Wilmington Wildcats on Nov. 7. in the Bob Carpenter Center at 7 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a 2022 CAA Champion Rings poster. After the game, the Blue Hens will stick around and sign the poster.

- Delaware commences its 2022-23 season against in-state opponent Wilmington after a 22-13 record in 2021-22. Delaware is 56-60 in season openers all-time and 22-8 in openers at the Bob Carpenter Center.
- The Blue Hens welcome back 10 letterwinners, including a pair of starters. Six newcomers join the roster with three freshmen and three transfers.
- The Blue Hens will aim to defend their CAA Championship this year. They were ranked third in the CAA Preseason Poll.
- Jameer Nelson Jr. was named to the All-CAA Preseason First Team after earning All-CAA Second Team honors last season. He is the team's leading returning scorer, averaging 13.6 ppg in 2021-22.
- Jyáre Davis, the 2022 CAA Rookie of the Year and CAA Tournament MVP, was named to the All-CAA Preseason Second Team. Davis averaged 9.7 ppg and shot 60.6% from the field last season.
- Graduate transfer LJ Owens will make his Delaware debut after being named to the America East All-Conference Third Team for UMBC last year.
- Transfer Christian Ray brings a rebounding specialty to the lineup after leading La Salle last season with 6.9 rpg.
- This is the first of six non-conference home games for the Blue Hens this season.
- Wilmington begins its 2022-23 campaign after an 11-18 record last season.
- This will be the first time the Wildcats open the season against a Division I opponent since 2012-13 when they played at Seton Hall, falling 113-72 in Newark, N.J.
- The 2022-23 season is Dan Burke's ninth as head coach of the Wildcats. Wilmington is 1-6 in season openers under hIM, having not won an opener since the 2016-17 season.
- Wilmington returns its leading scorer from 2021-22, senior Randy Rickards, who averaged 14.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last year.
- Wilmington assistant coach Micah Edwards was part of Delaware's back-to-back NCAA Tournament teams in 1991 and 1992. He was named team captain in 1994-95 and averaged 4.0 points per game and 2.6 rebounds per game during his time as a Blue Hen.
- This is Wilmington's only matchup against a Division I opponent this year and the first of seven non-conference road games for the Wildcats.
- These two squads have only faced once before. Delaware beat Wilmington, 70-40, on November 18, 2018 at the Bob Carpenter Center. Ithiel Horton scored 14 points to lead the Blue Hens in the win.
