Five Players Score in Double Digits as Men’s Basketball Falls to Cornell
12/1/2022 9:47:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware men's basketball (3-4) had its second-straight game against an Ivy League opponent on Thursday, returning home for a date with Cornell (6-1). Despite having five players score in double digits and shooting a season-best 49.1 percent, the Blue Hens fell 74-67.
A mostly even first half saw Delaware shoot a scorching 56 percent from the field, but the reason the game remained close after the first frame was Cornell scoring off turnovers. Delaware turned the ball over nine times, leading to nine points from the Big Red.
LJ Owens was perfect in the first half, shooting 3-for-3, to be tied for the lead among Blue Hen scorers with seven. Jameer Nelson Jr. also scored 7 in the first.
Christian Ray, Gianmarco Arletti and Jyáre Davis each tallied six apiece to contribute to Delaware's scoring line.
The Blue Hens continued along until midway through the second half when a 13-2 run staked them to a 60-51 lead.
This half was highlighted by a 12-point explosion by Ebby Asamoah, who shot 4-for-8 in the period, and scored all his points in the second frame. Asamoah was one of eight players last season to shoot 45 percent or better from beyond the arc in league play and finished 4-for-7 on Saturday.
Not to be outdone, the Big Red responded with a 15-2 run to overtake UD late in the second half. They continued to score off turnovers, capitalizing for 27 points when the Blue Hens surrendered the ball.
Owens (10), Nelson Jr. (13), Ray (12), and Davis (14) also reached the 10-point plateau in the game. This was Delaware's first game where five players scored double digits since January 20, 2022 at William & Mary.
Ray paced the team with 11 rebounds to complete the double-double for his second on the season. The nation's top defensive rebounder stayed on pace with eight against Cornell.
Delaware returns to action with a quick turnaround as the Atlantic 10's Davidson comes to the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
