No. 17 Men’s Lacrosse Tops Monmouth, 17-6

NEWARK, Del. – No. 17 Delaware (4-1) men's lacrosse put on a show at Delaware Stadium this afternoon posting a 17-6 victory over Monmouth (0-2).
"Following Tuesday's disappointing result, we challenged our team to respond the right way," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "Our captains led the way in practice during a quick turnaround and we had several guys step up during a strong team effort this afternoon. Our defense established a strong presence in the first quarter and allowed our offense to find our rhythm as the game progressed. Overall, it felt great to earn another team win here in historic Delaware Stadium."
Delaware did not score its first goal until 4:11 left in the first quarter. Defender Owen Grant sprinted past the Monmouth defense to score the first goal of the game. Grant's goal kicked off an 11-0 run for the Blue Hens.
At the end of the first quarter, the Blue Hens led 3-0 after Mike Robinson and JP Ward joined in on the scoring. The scoring continued in the second quarter, as the Blue Hens were truly connecting on all cylinders. It took one minute and 11 seconds for Delaware to get its groove in the second quarter and the rest was history. Freshman Jason Kolar capped off Delaware's run with his first collegiate goal at the 1:16 mark in the second quarter. The longest that Delaware went without scoring a goal in the second quarter was three minutes and 43 seconds, as the Blue Hens averaged one goal every one minute and 40 seconds.
Delaware never trailed in the game. Its 11-0 advantage was the largest lead in the first half so far this season. Robinson led all players with seven points, as he scored five goals on seven attempts and added a pair of assists for his second hat trick this season. Clay Miller added four points (3 goals, 1 assist) for his team-leading fourth hat trick of the season. Kyle Kivinski tallied a career-high three goals.
Defensively, the Blue Hens held Monmouth to 26 shot attempts and 14 on goal as the Hawks struggled to move the ball, which resulted in 20 turnovers on the day. Eight Blue Hens caused at least one turnover with Jason Seiter forcing two. The Blue Hens won the faceoff battle 14-13 as Logan Premtaj going 10-for-18.
Paul Reidy earned his first collegiate start, as the rookie picked up the win at goalkeeper today. Reidy made six saves in 45 minutes guarding the net. Matt Kilkeary collected a pair of saves in 15 minutes of play.
Six different players scored a goal for Monmouth, while Andrew Duswalt led the charge with two points (1 goal, 1 assist). Matt Souter scooped up 11 groundballs and went 13-26 in faceoff attempts. Goalkeeper Noah Lode made 17 saves for Monmouth, while Andrew Kuhlman collected three.
Next up for Delaware is a trip to Michigan to play the Wolverines. The game is scheduled for Saturday, March 5 at Michigan at noon.
