Softball Preview: UNCW

» The University of Delaware softball team will begin conference play this weekend as it travels to UNCW for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday, both starting at 12 p.m.

» The Blue Hens are 16-8 on the season after splitting a doubleheader against Villanova on Sunday. Halle Kisamore recorded her 100th career hit in a 2-0 setback in game one. Delaware bounced back in game two as an RBI double by Kailey Christian and a two-run home run by Brittney Mendoza led UD to a come-from-behind victory, 3-1, in eight innings.

» Graceyn Frost was named the CAA Pitcher of the Week for her efforts against Mount St. Mary's and Villanova. In the second game against Villanova, she picked up the win in the circle, allowing just one unearned run with a career-high nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings. The freshman improved to 7-2 in the circle this season, tying for the league-lead in wins.

» UNCW enters the weekend with an 18-4 record and has played 16 of its 22 games at home. As a team, UNCW is batting .285 and is scoring 6.0 runs per game. Tayler Vitola leads the squad with a .397 batting average while Janel Gamache is hitting .359 with a team-high six home runs and 24 RBI. The pitching staff owns a 1.90 ERA and Gamache is again leading the way with a 0.82 ERA in 25.2 innings. Amberlyn Pearce and Emily Winstead are both under 2.00 as well in 30 and 45 innings pitched, respectively.
