WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a pair of games at UNCW on Saturday to open CAA play. The Blue Hens fell 5-3 in the first game before the Seahawks completed the sweep with a 4-0 game two victory. With the two setbacks, UD falls to 16-10 on the season while UNCW moves to 20-4.
Game One: UNCW 5, Delaware 3
The Blue Hens looked to rally late, bringing the tying run to the plate but could not knot the score as they dropped the first game of CAA play.
Emily Winburn pitched another complete game, allowing just two unearned runs. Julz Garber had two of UD's five hits and Hanna Garber homered and drove in all three runs.
It was a pitcher's duel early as neither team could put a run on the board through the first three innings. UNCW broke the deadlock with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Seahawks added two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Blue Hens had just two baserunners through the first five innings, both reaching via a walk. The offense came alive in the top of the sixth inning as Julz Garber and Sarah Bessel led off with consecutive slap singles. Hanna Garber followed with her sixth home run of the season, a three-run, opposite-field blast that cut UD's deficit to 5-3.
Delaware threatened again in the top of the seventh as Julz Garber singled and Bessel walked with two outs, putting the tying run on base. However, a ground out ended the game.
Game Two: UNCW 4, Delaware 0
The Blue Hens only recorded two hits and UNCW pulled away late as the Seahawks completed the sweep.
Graceyn Frost struck out four and allowed just three earned runs in a complete-game effort. Halle Kisamore and Chloe Blantz had UD's only hits.
The Seahawks scored a run in the fifth and then tacked on three more in the sixth for all of the scoring.
The Blue Hens twice put a runner in scoring position, but could not find a way to score. Blantz led off the top of the third inning with a double, but she could not advance. In the sixth, Brooke Glanden walked and was placed by Grace Rudolph as a pinch runner. She moved up to second on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at third after a single by Kisamore.
Delaware and UNCW will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is slated for noon.
