TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware softball team earned a split of a CAA doubleheader at Towson on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers came back late to win game one 4-3, before the Blue Hens orchestrated a comeback of their own to claim a 5-4 win in game two. With the split, UD moves to 25-12 overall and 8-3 in CAA play.
Game One: Towson 4, Delaware 3
Hanna Garber and Julz Garber each had two hits to lead the offense while Brooke Glanden homered and drove in two runs. Sarah Bessel was on base twice.
Emily Winburn struck out four in 5.0 innings in the circle while allowing three runs. Graceyn Frost gave up one run in an inning of work.
The Blue Hens wasted no time as they took a 2-0 lead within the first two batters in the top of the first inning. Hanna Garber led off the game with a double into the left-center field gap before Glanden launched her eighth home run of the season to the opposite field to put UD up by two.
Towson cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first and then both pitchers settled in. The score remained the same until Sarah Bessel lined an RBI single into right field in the top of the fourth, scoring Morgan Olynyk to extend the lead back to two at 3-1.
The Tigers scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth before a two-run triple gave them their first lead in the bottom of the sixth, 4-3.
Delaware put a runner on second base in the top of the seventh, but a deep fly out fell short to end the game.
Game Two: Delaware 5, Towson 4
Hanna Garber again had two hits and scored two runs, while Kailey Christian and Julz Garber each had two bases. Chloe Blantz walked twice and drove in the winning run.
Frost started in the circle and went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out three. Megan Stauffer had a strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief while Winburn earned her 11th win of the season with 1.2 perfect innings.
Delaware again opened the scoring early as Hanna Garber led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by Brittney Mendoza.
Towson used a three-run fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Blue Hens immediately answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Hanna Garber led off with a triple and crossed the plate on an RBI infield single. With one out and runners on the corners, Christian doubled to right field to drive in Mendoza to knot the score. Jayla Brooks hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that gave UD the lead 4-3 lead as Halle Kisamore beat the throw home.
The Tigers tied things back up with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but again Delaware had an answer. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Blantz drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk that forced home Olynyk for the go-ahead run.
Winburn shut the door in the bottom of the seventh as the Blue Hens earned the split.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
