Robinson Scores Game-winning Goal for UD
4/23/2022 6:18:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Tye Kurtz was on fire today for the Delaware men's lacrosse team and Mike Robinson scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds remaining in the game to lift the Blue Hens to victory at Drexel this afternoon. Delaware handed Drexel its second loss of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
Delaware (8-5, 2-2 CAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Drexel (6-6, 2-2 CAA) thanks to Drew Lenkaitis who started the scoring at the 12:46 mark and Tye Kurtz who added a goal two minutes later. By the end of the first quarter, fans weren't sure if they should start breaking out Superman shirts for No. 2 because he was unstoppable. Kurtz aka Superman had a hat trick 12 minutes into the game and by the end of the first quarter the Blue Hens led Drexel 6-3.
Delaware continued its scoring ways to start the second quarter, as it took less than two minutes for Kurtz to net goal number four on the day. JP Ward had a shake and bake goal to extend Delaware's lead to 8-3 over Drexel with 12:51 to go in the first half. The Dragons managed to squeak out three goals in the second quarter, but it was the Blue Hens that entered halftime up 10-6.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter with Lenkaitis, Kurtz and Ward all scoring goals.
The fourth and final quarter saw the Dragons make it a two-goal game at the 9:09 mark, before adding on another goal 36 seconds later to trim Delaware's lead to one goal. After trading goals, Drexel tied the game at 15-All with 1:31 left in the game.
Delaware called a timeout with 30 seconds to go and it worked in its favor. Mike Robinson was able to scoop up the ball and score the game-winning goal in the open net for the win.
Kurtz finished with a career-high eight goals in the win to keep Delaware's chances of a CAA Tournament appearance alive.
The Blue Hens will close out conference play on Saturday, April 30 at Fairfield. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
