FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Delaware men's lacrosse team topped Fairfield 14-12 this afternoon to earn a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and close out league play on a three-game win streak.
The title is the second consecutive for Delaware as the Blue Hens were out right champions in 2021. Delaware shares the title with Towson and UMass as all three teams finished the season with a 3–2 conference record.
"I am so proud of our guys for the toughness & perseverance they demonstrated today during a gritty conference road win," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "We had a focused week of practice and prepared well for what we knew was going to be a very competitive game. It was far from a clean or complete game on our part, but collectively we found a way to win and advance."
Delaware (9-5,3-2 CAA) will enter next week's CAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Fairfield finished the season with an 8–6 overall record and a 2–3 mark in CAA play.
The Blue Hens held a 9-6 advantage at halftime over Fairfield with four goals in the first quarter and five goals in the second quarter. Tye Kurtz, JP Ward and Mark Bieda each had two goals apiece at the break. Matt Kilkeary was busy in the net, as he had 10 saves 30 minutes into the game.
Coming out of halftime, Fairfield scored first, but the Blue Hens handled their own. With more explosive goals by Kurtz and an all-around team effort by Delaware it was a great sight for blue and gold fans to see their team battle it out on the road.
The Stags tied it up at 12-12 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Delaware defense was ready for them in the final quarter. The Blue Hens held Fairfield scoreless during the final quarter while they were able to tack on two more goals and earn the road victory and a trip to the conference tournament.
Kilkeary finished with a career-high 19 saves. Kurtz tallied four goals and two assists for a team-best six points. Robinson and Bieda tallied three goals each. Owen Grant had five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Kurtz' goal at 7:01 in the second quarter was his career goal No. 100. He became the 15th player in school history to achieve the feat. Robinson scored his 100th goal at the 8:38 mark in the third quarter to join Kurtz in the prestigious club.
The CAA Tournament kicks off on Thursday, May 5 at Vidas Field, hosted by Drexel. The seeds for the tournament are as follows: No. 1 Delaware, No. 2 Towson, No. 3 UMass, No. 4 Drexel. It will be Delaware's fourth straight appearance in the conference tournament.
