NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team used a six-run fifth inning to defeat Elon 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Softball Stadium to complete a sweep of the three-game CAA series. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 20-11 overall and 4-2 in CAA play, while the Phoenix falls to 17-17 on the season and 1-5 in conference action.
Emily Winburn started in the circle and fired a complete game, her seventh of the season, to pick up her eighth win. She allowed just three hits and two runs while striking out nine.
Hanna Garber led the offense with three hits and was on base four times with a walk. Sarah Bessel had two hits and scored two runs, while Halle Kisamore, Brittney Mendoza and Kailey Christian were all on base twice and scored a run.
Elon opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as a sacrifice fly plated the game's first run.
The score remained the same until the fifth inning as both pitchers were cruising. Winburn was cruising, retiring 10-straight batters at one point after a two-out single in the second inning.
The UD offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate, with nine-consecutive Blue Hens reaching base with two outs. Bessel started the rally with a single inside the left field foul line. She raced around the bases to tie the game when Garber lined a triple down the left field line. Brooke Glanden followed with an RBI single back up the middle to put the Blue & Gold in the lead. After a walk put two runners on, Mendoza lined a two-run double over the right fielder's head. Christian walked before Blum capped the inning with an RBI single to left field that drove in Mendoza and Christian crossed the plate when the ball was booted in the outfield to make it 6-1.
The Phoenix got a run back in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Hens immediately answered in the bottom half. Bessel led off with a double and a pair of walks eventually loaded the bases with two outs. Christian lined a single into center field that brought home Bessel to put UD up 7-2.
Winburn shut the door with a perfect frame in the seventh, ending the game with her ninth strikeout.
Delaware will step out of conference play as it travels to Lehigh for a midweek matchup on Wednesday. First pitch in Bethlehem, Pa. is set for 4 p.m.
