NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored four runs in a sixth inning rally and went on to defeat Rider, 6-2, Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who won their sixth straight game, advance to the Liberty Bell Classic final against Villanova on Tuesday, April 19 at Citizens Bank Park. UD's win streak is its longest since also taking six in a row from May 7-19, 2017.
The Broncs struck first by scoring a run on a wild pitch in the top of the second, but Delaware got the run right back in the bottom half when Jake Dunion tripled and then crossed the plate on a groundout by Aidan Kane.
John Volpe put Rider back on top with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, before the Blue Hens pushed across four runs in the bottom half to take control. Bryce Greenly ignited the rally with a leadoff homer to left, and following singles by JJ Freeman and Joseph Carpenter, both runners scored when Dunion ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line.
One out later Joey Loynd singled home Dunion, while Freeman drove home Greenly with an RBI single in the seventh to close the scoring.
Greenly, Dunion and Loynd each finished with three hits to pace Delaware, while Freeman added two on the day.
The Blue Hens continued their run of impressive pitching, and have now allowed just six runs in the last four games. After starter Jose Ledesma gave up one run in the opening two frames, Dom Velazquez struck out three while not allowing a hit in the following three innings.
Gavin Hinchliffe allowed one run in the sixth to earn his first victory of the year, while Mike Biasiello then tossed three scoreless frames to pick up his sixth save.
Jim Sherman
"That's four straight games where we didn't score a lot of runs, but it's pleasant to see the pitching come through once again. We played some good defense and got great pitching. It was a really special day as we honored June Hannah, the wife of our Hall of Fame coach, who passed away on Sunday. It was fitting to have a moment of silence and have her daughter Heather here representing the family. That was special, not just for me but for everybody who's been involved with Delaware baseball over the years. She was a special person."
