NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware will begin to provide its men's and women's basketball student-athletes on scholarship with new benefits as a result of the Supreme Court's decision in NCAA v. Alston, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak announced Thursday. All men's and women's basketball student-athletes who are on scholarship will be eligible to participate and earn up to $5,980 annually if they meet the academic requirements set forth by the University. This program will go into effect for the 2022-23 school year.
"We're proud to be able to offer this to our basketball student-athletes based on their academic success", said Rawak. "We need to continue to be competitive in the ever-changing basketball landscape."
The Alston decision, which came out in June of 2021, granted institutions the opportunity to provide student-athletes with additional education-related benefits and direct financial support in the form of academic achievement awards.
"We greatly appreciate the support and commitment from our athletic department to our student-athletes with this announcement," Head Men's Basketball Coach Martin Ingelsby said. "This is a tremendous opportunity to reward our student-athletes for their hard work and success in the classroom, while continuing to provide them with the best student-athlete experience in the country. We are thankful to all those who worked hard to make this happen."
On June 27, 2022 the Board of Directors of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) approved a bylaw stating that by the start of the 2023-24 academic year, each CAA institution will establish its own program to provide a path by which its men's and women's basketball student-athletes would have the opportunity to earn Alston benefits not to exceed the allowable maximum of $5,980.
"I think it is great that the CAA and the University of Delaware have decided to follow suit with participation in the Alston funding," Head Women's Basketball Coach Sarah Jenkins said. "It is a great way to provide student-athletes with incentives to go above and beyond in the classroom. It also helps put us on a level playing field with other institutions who are participating."
