Volleyball Sweeps George Washington In Home Opener, 3-0
8/31/2022 8:06:00 PM | Volleyball
NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware volleyball team claimed the straight-set victory (25-22, 25-23, 25-14) over George Washington (0-3) inside Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. The win is the first of the season for the Blue Hens (1-2) along with head coach Kimberly Lambert earning her first victory at the helm of the program.
"I am extremely pleased with the outcome – a win is always nice to have," said Lambert. "We had unforced errors and there are a lot of things that we have to work on, but I am proud of the team for pulling themselves out of it. This is such a great group of girls and I truly can't take all the credit for any of this, this is all them. They worked so hard over the summer and throughout preseason; despite the unforced errors we want to try and avoid, they managed to pull it out and they did that on their own. I am just proud of the girls and grateful to have this team."
Delaware outhit George Washington .117 to .052 with their finest set coming in the third swinging at a rate of .357. The Blue Hens held the edge in points (47-34), kills (33-28), aces (9-2), blocks (5-4) and assists (31-26) while the Colonials led the way in digs (44-22).
The Blue Hens went on a 5-2 run to open the match capped by Lauryn Richardson nailing down Ezgi Basaranlar's feed. George Washington responded with a 6-0 run for the 8-5 lead. Both teams fought for the lead throughout the set as Delaware scored four straight to build a five-point cushion, 22-17. The Colonials pulled within two after Basaranlar's kill gave the Blue Hens set point, 24-22. Kirah Johnson then put set one in Delaware's win column after finishing Basaranlar's assist, 25-22.
After George Washington put together a dominating 16-6 run, 22-16, the Blue Hens never wavered. Lani Mason connected with Basaranlar to kickstart a much-needed 9-1 run to complete the come-from-behind 25-23 set two victory.
The Blue Hens remained in the driver's seat in the third set, opening with a 10-3 spurt capped by Pearce Augier and Lily Rogers teaming up to sent Brittany Myers attack away. The Colonials got in as close as five, 15-10, before Delaware closed out the match on a 10-4 run to earn their first win on the young season.
Mason led the way in with 12 kills to go with six digs, four assists and three assists in Delaware's win. Savannah Seemans followed with match-high 11 digs to go along with seven kills. Basaranlar directed the Blue Hen offense with a match-best 25 assists while Augier added three blocks.
