PRINCETON, N.J. – Delaware field hockey (1-6) falls to No. 8 Princeton (3-2) 3-1 in a non-conference road game on Friday.
"A good week of practice and conversations allowed us to take the length of a solid DEHO performance from 45 minutes to 52 minutes today. We understand we need to play 60 minutes of consistent hockey, and close the remaining 8-minute gap," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. "We created tons of scoring opportunities – outshooting and out cornering Princeton - but didn't convert on a number to make the difference in final score. On a couple of their break-aways we were a step behind which made the difference in their favor. We will be better for it come Rutgers on Sunday."
Both teams played strong defense in the first half. The two teams combined for four total shots.
In the second half, the Blue Hens were more active on the offensive end, putting up nine shots and five penalty corners. However, Princeton took the lead with a goal in the final minute of the third quarter.
The Blue Hens didn't go down without a fight. Kiki Oudshoorn tied the game with a goal at the 50th minute. She was assisted by Berber Bakermans. Oudshoorn received a pass from Bakermans and fit the ball past goalie at the top left corner of the net. It was Oudshoorn's second goal of the season.
Princeton responded with goals at the 53rd and 57th minute of the 4th quarter to secure the win.
The Blue Hens out-shot the Tigers 13-6, including a 6-5 shots on goal advantage. Bakermans led the Blue Hens with four shots and three shots on goal.
Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had three saves and allowed two goals.
The Blue Hens weekend road trip continues with a non-conference game against Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
