Blue Hens Score Season High Goals in Loss Against No. 19 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite scoring a season high in goals, Delaware field hockey (1-7) dropped a non conference game against No. 19 Rutgers (5-3) 5-4 on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights got off to a fast start, scoring a goal in the game's first minute to take an early lead. Genevieve Johnson responded with a goal at the 14th minute to tie the game 1-1. She was assisted by Ashlyn Carr and Lisa Kater. It was Johnson's first goal, Kater's first assist and Carr's second assist of the season. Johnson received a pass from Kater off a penalty corner from Carr to tie the game.
After the Scarlet Knights retook the lead 2-1 early in the second quarter, the Blue Hens closed the half with goals from Julia Duffhuis and Morgan Rigual to take a 3-2 lead. Duffhuis' goal was scored at the 17th minute, and was off a penalty stroke. It was her second of the season. Rigual's goal was at the 26th minute. She deflected a pass from Lia Becker off a penalty corner into the back of the net. It was Rigual's second goal of the season, and Becker's first assist of the season.
Rutgers opened the second half with goals in the 34th and 35th minute in the third quarter and the 46th minute of the fourth quarter to take a 5-3 lead.
The Blue Hens fought back with a Noelle Sabbagh goal with less than two minutes to cut the Scarlet Knight's lead 5-4. It was her team leading fourth goal of the season. She was assisted by Kiki Oudshoorn, earning her team leading fourth assist of the season.
With less than a minute to go, the Blue Hens had an opportunity to tie the game with a shot from Carr. However, her shot was saved by the Scarlet Knight's goalkeeper.
The Blue Hens out-shot the Scarlet Knights 12-7 and had a 7-5 shots on goal advantage. Duffhuis led the Blue Hens in shots with four, Johnson added three. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision.
The Blue Hens return to Rullo Stadium on Sunday, September 25 against Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
