NEWARK, Del. – Delaware field hockey (2-8, 1-1 CAA) picked up its first Colonial Athletic Conference win against Drexel (6-4, 0-1 CAA) 2-1 on Friday at Rullo Stadium.
"Proud of our team for earning the 'W' today. We knew the importance of the game and found a way to take care of business. It is nice to see that their determination and grit got it done for the Hens," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said.
Julia Duffhuis and Berber Bakermans tallied scores while Lizzie Gaebel picked up her second win of the season with five saves. It's the fifth time this season Gaebel collected at least five saves in a game.
The Blue Hens got on the board first with a goal from Duffhuis at the 9th minute of the first quarter off a penalty corner. Morgan Bradford received the inserted pass from Lisa Kater, passed it off to Duffhuis, who found the back of the net. It was Duffhuis' third goal of the season, while Bradford and Kater both earned their first assist of the season.
Following the Duffhuis goal, the Dragon tied the game with a goal at the 11th minute.
Bakermans scored the game-winning goal at the 43rd minute of the third quarter. Lia Becker passed the ball into the circle, Bakermans was able to get her stick through a group of Dragon defenders and poked the ball into the back of the net. It was Bakermans' second goal of the season, and her first goal since Aug. 26 against VCU. The assist was Becker's second of the season.
The Dragon didn't go down without a fight. With 10 seconds left, the Dragons were awarded a penalty corner. Gaebel made a clutch save with two seconds left to secure the win.
Drexel out shot Delaware 15-8 on the day, including a 6-3 shots on goal advantage. Duffhuis had three of the Blue Hens eight shots.
The Blue Hens travel to New York to take on Columbia in a non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
