Shorthanded Men’s Basketball Rallies for Win Over Northeastern

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware men's basketball (12-11, 4-6 CAA) scored a season-high 81 points to charge to victory over Northeastern (8-13, 4-6), 81-78, on Saturday afternoon from a season best crowd inside the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware danced out to a 7-2 lead before the Huskies rallied to knot things at nine apiece at the under-16 media timeout with 15:59 left. In a back-and-forth affair that saw five lead changes up to the midway point of the half, the Hens pulled ahead with a 16-3 advantage over a 3:51 span for a 10-point lead with 3:56 left in the opening half. The home team finished ahead 42-36 at the break.
Christian Ray shouldered the offensive load, scoring a game-high 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the inaugural frame. Ebby Asamoah and Cavan Reilly each contributed eight with the latter hitting 2-of-3 from downtown. Delaware hit on 51.9 percent of its attempts in the first half, including a scorching 62.5 percent from three compared to its opponent, who had marks of 40-percent and 41.7 percent, respectively.
Northeastern slowly chipped away at the Blue Hens' lead in the second period, pulling within three at 56-53 with 11:26 on the clock for the media stoppage. Delaware regrouped and tore off a 6-0 spurt to pull ahead 62-55, forcing a timeout by the visitors.
Again, the Huskies chewed away at the deficit. This time, using nine-straight points to tie the game at 68 apiece with 4:42 left in the game. UD pulled ahead late connecting on four-straight field goals to claim a 77-72 advantage with 1:07 left in the game. During that stretch, Northeastern was held scoreless for 2:02. Some clutch free throws and defense down the stretch ultimately kept the Hens on top.
The second half saw Jameer Nelson Jr. and Gianmarco Arletti come alive for the Blue & Gold. Nelson was held to just five points in the first half but exploded for 16 in the second half, and Arletti similarly exploded for 14 to score a season-high 18. Arletti also tied a career-high by grabbing seven rebounds.
The duo was joined by Ray (15) and Reilly (14) in double figures, with the former snagging a team-high eight boards.
Coincidentally, Coleman Stucke also was on fire in the second half for Northeastern, scoring 26 to record a game-high 34.
While the Hens cooled off from three, the team still finished shooting an even 50-percent (7-for-14) while shooting 48.1 percent overall. Northeastern had marks of 45-percent and 42.3 percent.
Delaware returns to action on Thursday for its inaugural CAA bout with Monmouth.
