Men’s Basketball Falls Late at No. 23/RV Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Delaware men's basketball (9-7, 1-2 CAA) hung with No. 23/RV Charleston (16-1, 4-0 CAA) Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell late, 75-64. Four Blue Hens recorded double-digit scoring totals.
Neither team led by more than four points in the first half until Charleston took an 8-0 run late in the period to go up 31-22 with 2:34 left. The home team would extend it to nine, but finished the half on top 35-27.
Delaware outshot the Cougars 41-percent to 32-percent in the first stanza, but Charleston made up for it with a 15-of-19 performance from the stripe compared to UD's 2-of-3.
Jyáre Davis led all players at the break with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, with LJ Owens adding eight.
The Cougars went ahead by as many as nine before the Blue Hens took a 6-0 run to pull within a possession at 40-38 with 15:48 remaining in the second. Delaware used a 9-2 advantage to regain the lead 49-48 with 11:34 left. After trading scores, Charleston used a 7-0 run to pull ahead again 57-51. The home team went up 10 and the Blue Hens couldn't overcome it.
Davis finished with a game-high 18 points with Christian Ray (14), Cavan Reilly (12), and Owens (10) joining him in double figures. Reilly's 12 points are a career-high for the rookie.
Davis added nine rebounds and four assists, while Ray snagged eight boards. Gianmarco Arletti posted six points, six rebounds, and a career-best three blocks.
Collectively, the Hens shot 44.3 percent from the field compared to Charleston's 37.7 percent. The Cougars ended going 24-of-33 from the line while the Blue Hens shot 7-of-13.
Of note for the Hens, Aleks Novakovich returned to the floor for the first time since March 7, 2021 after dealing with injuries.
Jameer Nelson Jr. missed the game with left knee soreness.
Delaware returns home for a midweek matchup against preseason favorite Towson on Wednesday.
