Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight Match in 3-1 Victory Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Stony Brook in four sets (25-20, 25-8, 23-25, 25-20) on Oct. 15, 2023. Delaware has now won five straight games, the longest winning streak currently in the CAA, and sit just one game behind Towson for first place in the conference standings. Ezgi Basaranlar recorded her 3,500th career assist during the match, becoming the fourth Blue Hen and 25th active player to reach the mark.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Lani Mason had a game-high 15 kills, hit .389, and added 10 digs.
- Madelyn Grunza had 14 kills, hit .737, and had three blocks.Â
- Kirah Johnson had 11 kills, hit .355, and had a game-high 13 blocks.Â
- Savannah Seemans had seven kills, three aces, and eight digs.Â
- Ezgi Basaranlar recorded 39 assists, 10 digs, and four blocks.
- Eileen Gex had 11 digs and her second career kill.
- Amelia Painter had a team-best 12 digs.Â
- As a team, Delaware had a total of 16 blocks.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Stony Brook pulled out to a 9-6 lead to begin the game. Delaware scored eight of the next nine points to go up 14-10, highlighted by three kills from Mason.
- A 5-0 run by Delaware pushed the Blue Hens' lead up to 21-13, helping them to a 25-20 set one win.
- Grunza had five kills in the opening set, while Mason had four and Basaranlar had 11 assists.
- The Blue Hens immediately took control of the second set and went up 10-0. Seemans had three aces and Mason had two kills during the run.
- Six straight points by Delaware and 10 of the next 11Â bumped the lead to 23-6, and eventually a 25-8 set win.
- Mason added four more kills in the set, with Seemans contributing three. Basaranlar had eight assists.
- Stony Brook took a 6-1 lead to begin the third. Delaware raced back to take a 12-9 lead midway through and maintained a 20-16Â advantage.
- The Seawolves scored five straight points to take a 21-20 lead. After Delaware tied the set at 23, Stony Brook scored the final two points to force a fourth set.Â
- Mason had four kills in the set, and Basaranlar added nine more assists.
FOURTH SET
- A kill by Gex gave Delaware a 7-3 lead to begin the fourth.Â
- Seven straight points by Delaware gave them a 15-7 lead. Four more points in a row gave UD a 19-9 lead. Stony Brook cut the deficit to 23-19, but Delaware held on to win.
- Mason again had four kills, while Basaranlar also had nine assists.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware is now on a five-game win streak for the second time this season. They were on a six-game win streak to begin the season.Â
- After claiming the second set, Delaware had won 14 consecutive sets. It was their most consecutive set victories since winning 17Â in a row from Sept. 14-25, 2007.Â
- Delaware's 25-8 win in set two was their largest set victory of the season and their largest since beating Temple 25-8 in the first set of their game on August 27, 2021. They also recorded their second 10-0 run of the season, last done against Lamar on Sept. 2 during the first set.Â
- Basaranlar became the fourth player in program history with 3,500 career assists. She joined Nikki Brassell (4,538), Megan Welch (4,234), And Jess Chason (3,563). She is also the 25th active player to reach the mark. Basaranlar also recorded her sixth double-double of the season.
- Grunza's .737 hitting percentage was a career-best. It was the first time a Delaware player had at least a .700 hitting percentage with double-digit kills since Johnson hit .786 with 11 kills against Northeastern on Nov. 18, 2021, during the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals.Â
- Mason recorded her 10th double-double of the season.Â
- Johnson recorded her second career game with at least 10 blocks, also done on Sept. 4, 2022 (12) against UMBC. Her 13 total blocks were tied for the fourth most in a game in program history, and the most for a Delaware player since Chelsea Lawrence had 12 against UNCW on Oct. 5, 2012.Â
- Gex recorded her second career kill. Her first also came against Stony Brook, on Oct. 15, 2022.Â
