Volleyball Completes Another Reverse Sweep In Win Over Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball completed their second reverse sweep of the season (26-28, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-15) in their come-from-behind victory over Hofstra. The Blue hens earned their sixth straight victory to remain undefeated in October.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Lani Mason had a game-high tying 17 kills and added 15 digs.
- Kirah Johnson had 14 kills, hit .300, and had three blocks.Â
- Ezgi Basaranlar recorded 48 assists and three blocks.
- Savannah Seemans had 11 kills and 17 digs.Â
- Anna Logan Gillens recorded eight kills and hit .308.
- Eileen Gex had 13 digs.
- Amelia Painter had 11 digs.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had eight kills and five blocks.
- Hannah Wright had two aces and six digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Back-to-back aces by Wright gave Delaware a 6-2 lead, and they maintained a four-point lead at 17-13 later on.Â
- Two 3-0 runs by Hofstra eventually tied the set at 22. Delaware scored two straight points to take a 25-24 lead, and led 26-25 before three straight Hofstra points gave them a set one win.Â
- Mason had six kills, while Whitfield-Moss had four.Â
- Hofstra jumped out to an early lead in the second set, going up 11-5. Whitfield-Moss began a 5-0 run with a kill to get Delaware back within a point. Kills by Mason and Seemans on consecutive rallies tied the set at 15.Â
- Hofstra scored seven of the next eight points to take a 22-16 lead. Logan Gillens jump started another 5-0 Blue Hen run with a kill, with Mason and Johnson also recorded kills and Painter picking up an ace, to pull Delaware within one. Hofstra was able to claim the set, 25-22.
- Mason had four more kills in the second set, and Basaranlar had 10 assists.
- Delaware began their comeback by taking an 8-4 lead and maintaining a 16-9 advantage. The Blue Hens began the set with kills by Seemans, Johnson, Mason, and Whitfield-Moss, while Basaranlar, Whitfield-Moss, and Logan Gillens all had blocks during the first eight points.Â
- Hofstra battled back to cut the lead to 18-16, but an ace by Painter gave Delaware a 24-19 lead and Seemans finished the set off with a kill.Â
- Seemans and Johnson each had four kills, and Basaranlar had 12 assists.
FOURTH SET
- Both teams remained nearly even to start the fourth, but a 4-0 run by the Blue Hens gave them an 18-12 lead.Â
- Logan Gillens recorded a kill to give Delaware a 21-15. Hofstra rallied to cut the lead down to 23-20, but a block by Whitfield-Moss and Mason gave Delaware a 25-20 set win and forced a decisive set.
- Logan Gillens had four kills and Basaranlar had nine assists in the fourth.Â
FIFTH SET
- Three straight points by Delaware, helped out by kills by Seeman and Logan Gillens, put Delaware up 8-5.Â
- Hofstra scored five straight points to take a two-point lead, but Delaware fought back and scored five of the next six points to take a 13-11 lead. With the score tied at 15, Mason and Seemans recorded kills to complete Delaware's comeback.Â
- Mason had four kills in the final set, with Seemans picking up three.Â
GAME NOTES
- Mason recorded her 11th double-double of the season. Her 17 kills were the most she's had in a game since having 22 against Towson on Sept. 22. Her 15 digs were the most she's had since Nov. 11, 2022, when she had 18 against William & Mary during the CAA Tournament semifinals.Â
- Mason has 1,385 career kills, fourth most in Delaware history.Â
- Basaranlar's 48 assists were the second most she's had in a game this season, trailing only the 51 she had against Tarleton State on Sept. 1. She now has 3,559 career assists, trailing Jess Chason (3,563) by just four for third-most in program history.Â
- Seemans recorded her fifth double-double of the season and her fifth game with at least 15 digs.Â
- Logan Gillens recorded career-highs in kills and blocks.Â
- Wright picked up her third game this season with multiple aces. Her six digs were a season-best, and the most she's had in a game since recording nine on Sept. 11, 2021 against Wichita State.Â
- Delaware has won six consecutive games for the second time this season. They began the season with six straight wins.
- This is the first time Delaware has had two six-game winning streaks in the same season since 2011.Â
- Delaware's last two home games have been reverse sweep wins, also having done so on Oct. 1 against The College of Charleston.
