HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The University of Delaware softball team used timely hitting on Saturday to come away with two more wins at the 2023 Bearkat Classic, hosted by Sam Houston State. The Blue Hens defeated UTSA 4-2 in the first game before rallying for a 7-4 win over Northwestern State to improve to 4-0 on the young season.
Game One: Delaware 4, UTSA 2
In a game that featured just four total base hits, the Blue Hens made the most out of theirs in a 4-2 victory. Chloe Blantz and Morgan Olynyk both delivered RBI doubles and UD scored another run on an error to provide all of the offense.
Taylor Wroten started in the circle and struck out five in 4.0 innings, while allowing two runs on one hit and five walks. Emily Winburn picked up the win in relief, firing 3.0 shutout innings with four strikeouts.
It was a scoreless deadlock until the Blue Hens broke through in the top of the third inning. Blantz led off with a walk, advanced to second on a ground out and came around to score on an error.
Blantz doubled the lead to 2-0 in the fourth with a two-out RBI double that chased home Katie Scheivert.
UTSA tied the game in the fourth with a pair of runs, but Delaware retook the lead in the sixth inning. A pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position before Olynyk scored them both with a double to left, giving UD a 4-2 lead.
Winburn allowed just one base runner over the final two innings to seal the win.
Game Two: Delaware 7, Northwestern State 4
The Blue Hens scored the final five runs of the game to overcome a late two-run deficit and win their fourth-straight game to start the season.
Five different players had two hits as the UD offense totaled 13 hits with three extra-base knocks. Blantz had two hits and also scored two runs, while Olynyk was on base three times with two hits and a walk.
Kendall Shank earned the win with 2.2 innings of one-run relief. Winburn picked up the save, the eighth of her career to tie the Delaware record, with 2.0 scoreless innings.
The Blue Hens took a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first as Kiara Mills doubled in Julz Garber, but Northwestern State answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Hanna Garber drove in a run with a double of her own to tie things up in the second, but against NSU responded with single runs in the second and fourth innings to go up 4-2.
Delaware started its comeback in the top of the fifth inning as Kristen Luzon drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the gap to 4-3.
In the sixth, a single and double put two runners in scoring position before Mills scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game. Olynyk then did the same thing to give UD a one-run lead before Luzon delivered an RBI single, her first career hit, to score Blantz and put Delaware ahead 6-4.
Julz Garber crossed the plate on an error in the seventh to provide the final 7-4 score.
Delaware will wrap up its opening weekend when it heads over to the Houston Invitational on Sunday. The Blue Hens will take on Houston at 1:30 p.m.
