NEWARK, Del. - Delaware women's lacrosse earned their second consecutive win to start the season by defeating Lafayette, 16-12, on Feb. 15 at Delaware Stadium.
This was a great team win for the Hens," head coach Amy Altig said. "We had people stepping up in many different roles and doing whatever the team needed at that moment. All 38 of our players were vital to our win today. I am proud of the fight we showed and the endless energy they gave today!"
Delaney McDaniel shined for the Blue Hens with seven assists, tied for fourth most in program history, and a goal. Delaware also saw five players score multiple goals, led by Danielle Livornese, Lizzie Hsu, and Morgan Gore with three apiece. Laurel McHale and Lizzie Yurchak scored two goals each, while Halen Saroney and McKenzie Didio each scored a goal, while Saroney added two assists. Madison Hranicka had another solid game on the defensive side as she recorded four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Sam Schelling had three ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls. Maggie Farragher, Livornese, and Gore all had four draw controls, and Mercy McCarthy had seven saves.
The Blue Hens immediately jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter. McHale scored on the opening possession, then Hsu scored two consecutive goals, her first goals of the season, before Yurchak found the back of the net for the first time this year. The Leopards fought back and scored three unanswered goals to end the quarter.
For the second consecutive game, Delaware erupted in the second quarter by scoring six goals. McHale and Livornese got the Blue Hens going with goals within the two minutes. After a Lafayette goal, Didio scored the first goal of her career, and Livornese added Delaware's second consecutive goal at the 5:20 mark. Livornese teamed up with Gore to score the Blue Hens' final goals of the quarter, sending Delaware into halftime up 10-5. McDaniel recorded four assists in the frame.
Both teams played evenly in the third, scoring four goals each. Four different Blue Hens scored for Delaware, started by Livornese and followed by Yurchak, McDaniel, and Saroney.
Hsu and Gore both scored their third goals of the night to begin the final quarter to put the Blue Hens up 16-9 with 11:40 remaining. Lafayette scored the final three goals of the game but Delaware held on for a four-point win.
McDaniel joined Mia DeRuggiero (nine on 3/27/19 and 3/9/18, seven on 4/27/19), Karen Emas (eight on 4/17/84), and Denise Swift (seven on 4/21/84) as the only Delaware players to ever have seven assists in a game. Livornese has begun the season with back-to-back three-goal games, giving her six through the first two games. Hsu recorded her sixth career three-goal game, while Gore had her first. Livornese, Hsu, and Gore became the first trio of teammates to all score at least three goals in a game since DeRuggiero, Claire D'Antonio, and Christine Long did so on May 7, 2020. Hranicka now has seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers through the first two games as well. Delaware has won their first two games of the season since 2016, and have now won 10 consecutive games over Lafayette dating back to 1993.
The Blue Hens will next play Temple on Feb. 22 at 4:00 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
