CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware softball team opened up CAA play on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader at the College of Charleston. The Blue Hens opened things up with a 7-5 comeback win, before dropping a 4-2 decision in game two. With the two results, Delaware moves to 8-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game One: Delaware 7, Charleston 5
Delaware used a five-run fifth inning to overcome a deficit and held on for the win.
Julz Garber had two hits and was on base three times, while Kiara Mills also reached three times via a hit and two walks. Katie Scheivert finished with two RBI while Hanna Garber and Grace Rudolph each scored two runs.
Emily Winburn picked up the win in the circle with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings, allowing three runs. Taylor Wroten earned her first save of the season with 1.2 hitless innings.
After Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Blue Hens scored a pair of runs without a hit in the top of the third to go up 2-1. Rudolph scored when Julz Garber reached on an error and then Hanna Garber came across on a double steal attempt.
The Cougar immediately regained the lead with a two-run home run, but Delaware had the answer in the top of the fifth. Consecutive singles by Rudolph and both Garber sisters loaded the bases with nobody out. Scheivert delivered UD's fourth-straight single to drive in both Rudolph and Hanna Garber before Julz Garber scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittney Mendoza. A two-out RBI single by Kristen Luzon brought in Mills to make it 7-3.
Charleston scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-5 game, but Wroten recorded the final five outs to shut the door.
Game Two: Charleston 4, Delaware 2
The Blue Hens managed just two hits as Charleston came back to split the day.
Mendoza and Chloe Blantz recorded the only two hits as each delivered an RBI single to lead the offense. Wroten struck out three in 4.0 innings, striking out three.
Charleston again struck first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the fourth, Hanna Garber reached on an error and Mills was hit by a pitch. Consecutive two-out, RBI singles by Mendoza and Blantz gave UD the 2-1 lead.
The Cougars reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to provide the final score.
The two teams will wrap up the CAA-opening weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
