NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Delaware softball team split a pair of one-run games on Sunday for the second-straight day at the 2023 Pirate-Spartan Classic. The Blue Hens dropped a tight 6-5 game to Binghamton to open the day before defeating Norfolk State 5-4 in nine innings. With the two decisions, Delaware moves to 7-10 on the season.
Game One: Binghamton 6, Delaware 5
Hanna Garber and Julz Garber had two hits apiece to lead the offense, while Katie Scheivert and Kiara Mills each had two RBI. Taylor Wroten had three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief in the circle.
The Blue Hens took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Hanna Garber led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Scheivert.
Binghamton answered with a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to go up 4-1 before Delaware came back with a four-run third inning to reclaim the lead. Julz Garber started the rally with an RBI single that scored Jayla Brooks. Scheivert then drove in Hanna Garber with a double to left field before Mills put UD up 5-4 with a two-run single.
The Bearcats evened things up with a run in the bottom of the third before another run in the fourth proved to be the game-winner. Delaware put runners on in the fifth and sixth inning, but could not score the tying run.
Game Two: Delaware 5, Norfolk State 4 (9 innings)
Wroten started in the circle and pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out four. Emily Winburn fired 3.0 hitless innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn the win. Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz each had two hits, while Mills had three more RBI.
Delaware again jumped on the board quickly in the first inning. Julz Garber reached on a one-out single before stealing second. She went to third on an error before scoring on an RBI ground out by Mills to give UD a 1-0 lead.
After Norfolk State tied things up in the bottom of the second inning, the Blue Hens had a quick response as Hanna Garber crossed the plate in the top of the third as Scheivert reached on an error.
In the fifth, RBI singles by Mills and Brittney Mendoza extended the lead to 4-1. However, a run for Norfolk State in the fifth and two in the sixth tied things up and sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Scheivert singled with one out and stole second. Mills grounded one back to the pitcher but the throw was wild, allowing Scheivert to come all the way home and give Delaware the 5-4 lead.
Winburn shut the door in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
The Blue Hens will head back out on the road next weekend to open CAA play at the College of Charleston. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11 starting at 12 p.m. before concluding the weekend on Sunday, March 12 at 12 p.m.
