Baseball Uses Strong Pitching, Home Run Ball to Top George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – Delaware baseball (17-16, 6-6 CAA) won its second-straight contest against an A-10 opponent, atoning for an earlier loss against George Washington (11-23, 2-4 A-10) by upending the Colonials 8-3 on Wednesday.
"It feels good [to win these games], it's good momentum," head coach Greg Mamula said. "It allows guys to relax and be ourselves."
The Hens got on the board almost immediately with Josearmando Diaz driving in a run with a sacrifice fly and Jake Dunion chopping an RBI single into right field. The Colonials scored an unearned run in the bottom half.
Up 2-1 in the second, JJ Freeman clubbed the first of three Delaware homers in the game, a two-run shot, to put Delaware up three runs.
Starter Carter Welch settled in after allowing a second-inning run, followed by Dan Covino and Andrew Amato adding home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Colonials answered back with a homer in the bottom half.
Welch fired two more scoreless innings, exiting the game allowing two earned runs and striking out four in seven strong innings.
"The fastball-changeup combo was working a lot and I just had to attack the zone the whole time," Welch said. "It feels good to win the game, first and foremost, but being able to be extended on the mound felt great."
Welch's outing was the longest by any Delaware starting pitcher this season and tied for the longest overall outing.
"That was huge, especially because he didn't make it out of the first inning on Saturday," Mamula said. "He's been working and working on a changeup to get righties out, and today, he executed, got a lot of swings and misses and bad contact on it which is a big progression for him as a pitcher."
Delaware scored twice more in the seventh thanks to an RBI double by Diaz and a run-scoring groundout by Dunion.
The tandem of Kevin Williams and Christian Colmery pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game 8-3, Delaware's eighth win in its last 10 contests.
Amato and Covino each recorded multiple hits and Freeman, Diaz and Dunion drove in multiple runs.
The Blue Hens host North Carolina A&T for a weekend series beginning on Friday.
