Hranicka Ties Single-Game Caused Turnover Program Record In Women's Lacrosse's Close Loss To Drexel
4/15/2023 6:45:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. - Madison Hranicka of Delaware's women's lacrosse team recorded a program record-tying seven caused turnovers, along with six ground balls, against Drexel on Saturday at Delaware Stadium. In a game that featured a near three-and-a-half hour weather delay, and four lead changes, Drexel came out with a 13-11 win, in a highly-contested CAA matchup.
Lizzie Yurchak led the offense with four goals, while Riley Gillin and Delaney McDaniel added two each. Keira Grant, Danielle Livornese, and Sydni Rosa all scored a goal too. McDaniel added two assists and Megan Bozzi added one. Livornese had five draw controls, and Yurchak and Sam Schelling had four.
Delaware came out hot to begin the game against a team ranked 13th in the country in goals allowed per game, jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the first five minutes and ended the quarter strong, going up 6-3 after the first 15 minutes. McDaniel connected with Grant for the game's first goal on Delaware's first possession, and Yurchak scored after Hranicka forced a turnover on the next possession. Rosa scored her fourth goal of the season to put Delaware up 3-1 at the 10:06 mark. Yurchak scored on a free-position shot five minutes later, and McDaniel and Gillin closed the quarter with goals to give the Blue Hens a three-goal lead.
Drexel scored the first two goals of the second quarter before a weather delay paused the game with 5:24 remaining. The game would remain delayed for three hours and 26 minutes before finally resuming play at 4:20 p.m. Livornese scored right after the game's resumption, but Drexel responded with three consecutive goals to take their first lead at 8-7. Gillin tied the game up just before halftime with her second goal of the game.
A tough defensive quarter saw Yurchek score the lone goal of the third at the 9:10 mark to put Delaware up 10-8. McDaniel and Yurchek scored in between a Drexel goal to put the Blue Hens up 11-9 with 9:45 remaining. Drexel, however, scored four straight goals to end the game.
Hranicka's seven caused turnovers tied Erin Wein (March 5, 2016 against Canisius) and Caitlin McCartney (March 4, 2015 against Monmouth) for the most in a game in program history. She now has 37 caused turnovers for the season, two shy of tying Chantae Simms' (2019) and Erin Wein's (2016) single-season program record of 39. Hranicka is also the eighth player in program history with at least 30 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls in a season, joining Christy Buck (2000), Liz Walton (2000), Ashley Moderacki (2001), Laurie Tortorelli (2002), Erin Wein (2014, 2015), Caitlin McCartney (2015), Becky Gohsler (2018), and Chantae Simms (2018, 2019). She's also the first player to have two games of at least six ground balls in one season since Taylor Carpentier in 2018. Yurchak recorded her second hat trick of the season and her fourth at Delaware. McDaniel had her fourth career game with multiple goals and assists. Gillin has scored two goals in three of her last seven games dating back to March 11.
Delaware hits the road on April 22 to take on Elon at noon.
