ELON, N.C. - Delaware's women's lacrosse team came from behind in the second half to pull off a win in the final seconds over Elon, 12-11, on April 22. McKenzie Didio scored the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining, and Madison Hranicka set the single-season caused turnover record with 40 during the game. With the win, Delaware has put itself in a position for a CAA Conference Tournament spot with one game remaining in the regular season next week.
"Gritty win for our team today," head coach Amy Altig said. "For our team to come in and withstand another weather delay and bounce back showed a true testament of what we're made of as we continue to get better before we head home to play Towson. We really stepped it up in the second half and we're looking forward to next week."
Danielle Livornese scored three goals and had five draw controls in the win, while Lizzie Hsu, Riley Gillin, and Lizzie Yurchak all scored a pair of goals. In addition to Didio, Meghan Johnson, and Morgan Gore also scored a goal each. Delaney McDaniel had four assists and Yurchak, Livornese, and Megan Bozzi added one. Defensively, Hranicka had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, and Yurchak caused two turnovers and had two ground balls. Delaware again dominated the draw controls, with Sam Schelling leading the way with seven while Yurchak chipped in six to go along with Livornese' five. Foohey allowed just four goals and saved six shots in just over 42 minutes of action in goal.
Elon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Delaware responded with three straight goals to cut the deficit to one, with Johnson and McDaniel connecting for the Blue Hen's first goal, Gore scoring the second, and Hsu ending the spurt at the 4:17 mark.
The Phoenix opened the second quarter with three consecutive goals to reclaim a four-goal lead. Delaware defensively kept Elon off the board for the remainder of the half, and Gillin and Hsu helped reclaim momentum heading into the break with goals to make it 7-5 heading into halftime. The game entered a weather delay during halftime, stopping play for just over an hour before resuming.
Yurchak scored twice to open the second half as both teams exchanged goals in the first five minutes of the third. Delaware tied the game for the first time on goals by Livornese and Gillin, with the equalizer coming on a caused turnover by Livornese, who found Gillin on a breakaway for the score. Elon briefly retook the lead at the 4:29 mark, but McDaniel connected with Livornese 13 seconds later to tie it back up at 10.
Livornese then gave Delaware their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter with 13:27 left. Elon was able to tie the game with 29 seconds remaining, but Didio buried the game-winner before time expired to give Delaware the victory in their road finale.
Hranicka broke the program caused turnover record that was set by Chantae Simms in 2019 and Erin Wein in 2016, and now has 73 caused turnovers for her career. McDaniel had her third game this season with at least four assists, and now has a new career-high of 30 this season. She joins Mia DeRuggiero (53, 2019 and 36, 2018), Denise Swift (43, 1984), and Karen Emas (34, 1983 and 32, 1984) as the only players in program history with at least 30 assists in a season. Livornese recorded her seventh hat trick of the season. With her assist today, Bozzi now has 95 career points. Schelling and Yurchak both tied their career-highs in draw controls with their seven and six. Delaware out-draw controlled Elon 19-7, the seventh game this season Delaware had more draw controls than their opponent and the ninth time they were at least even. It's also the sixth time they've had at least 10 more draw controls than their opponent. They now have 215 draw controls for the season, three shy of tying a team single-season record.
Delaware returns home to play Towson at noon on April 29 in the regular-season finale, with a chance at a CAA Conference Tournament berth.
