PHILADELPHIA – Delaware baseball (20-17, 9-6 CAA) fell in the Liberty Bell Classic Finals at Citizens Bank Park to Rider (25-11, 9-3 MAAC) 8-2 on Tuesday night, losing in the championship game for the second season in a row.
The Broncs tacked on early against starter Carter Welch, scoring four runs in the first two innings to give Delaware an early hole to climb out of.
Loading the bases in the third and fourth innings, Delaware only mustered one run on a Tyler Leach ground ball that eluded the Rider third baseman.
The tandem of Jack DiLeo, Christian Colmery, Wyatt Nelson, Chris Grome and Eli Atiya kept the Broncs off the board through the middle innings, but the Blue Hens still did not capitalize on the zeroes put up.
The Broncs chipped in three runs in the final two innings to stretch the lead to five heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Owen Petrich drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the ninth, and Jake Dunion followed with a run-scoring groundout, but it was not enough as Delaware dropped the midweek contest 8-3.
Bryce Greenly was the only Delaware player with multiple hits in the game, scoring the lone run. Aidan Kane reached 100 career hits in the loss.
The Blue Hens have a huge conference series this weekend, traveling to UNCW for a three-game set beginning on Friday.
