NEWARK, Del. – Delaware men's basketball has signed former Pitt and Albany guard Gerald Drumgoole Jr., head coach Martin Ingelsby announced Saturday. The Rochester, N.Y. will be immediately eligible upon completion of his degree at Albany and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited Gerald has chosen to be a Blue Hen," Ingelsby said. "He is a veteran skilled guard with big-time shot making & scoring ability that will fit in well with our style of play. We look forward to getting him to campus this summer and acclimated to our program."
The 6-5, 205-pound guard comes to UD after two years at Albany. Last season, Drumgoole averaged 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in 33.4 minutes per outing. He played in all 31 games for the Great Danes, making 30 starts as the team's leader in points, assists, and steals.
"I chose to come to Delaware because I wanted to become a part of something bigger than myself," Drumgoole said. "I feel like here I have the opportunity to take my game to a new level as well as compete for a championship."
He finished his breakout season second in the America East in points per game and three-point field goals per game (2.5), while also landing fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.343).
Drumgoole tallied 24 double-digit scoring outbursts last season, including 11 20+ point games, and four at 25 or better. Notably, he tallied a double-double at NIU with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also connected on at least four triples in 10 different games.
Prior to joining Albany, he spent two seasons at Pitt, playing in 30 games for the Panthers, including two starts. He was an All-ACC Academic Team selection during the 2019-20 season and averaged 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.
Drumgoole graduated from La Lumiere in La Porte, Indiana in 2019 and aided the powerhouse to a 31-1 record and runner-up finish at the GEICO High School Nationals in his lone year at the institution. Prior to that he spent his first three years at West Irondequoit High School in Rochester, New York, where he led the team to back-to-back Section V Class A1 titles.
He would garner plenty of recognition in high school, being named Player of the Year, First Team All-Greater Rochester, and Second Team All-State after averaging 19.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game during his junior campaign. During that same season, he aided his team to a Section 5 title.
As a sophomore, his 13.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per outing landed him on the First Team All-Greater Rochester and Seventh Team All-State. During that year, the team would claim the 2017 State Title.
Coming out of high school, he was rated the No. 116 player in the country and No. 4 from New York by 247Sports.
Off the court, Drumgoole was also a First Team All-Greater Rochester selection as a wider receiver and safety on the football field. A relative of former NFL corner back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and NBA G-Leaguer for the Oklahoma City Blue Dane Miller, Drumgoole was considered a high major Division I football prospect before giving up the sport to focus on basketball following his junior season of high school.
