NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team completed its third-consecutive conference sweep on Saturday, defeating Stony Brook 3-2 in a CAA contest at Delaware Softball Stadium. With the win, the Blue Hens extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 19-15 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
Emily Winburn fired another complete game in the circle, allowing just two runs, one earned on seven hits while striking out five.
Brittney Mendoza was the only Blue Hen with multiple hits, recording a single and a double. Chloe Blantz also doubled while Hanna Garber and Grace Hrustich both added singles.
After going down in order in each of the first three innings, Delaware's offense broke out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hanna Garber led off with a bunt single before Julz Garber reached on an error to put two runners on. Mendoza lined a one-out single into right field that scored Hanna Garber and sent Julz Garber to third. On the first pitch to Hrustich, the two base runners executed a double steal that gave UD a 2-0 lead.
Stony Brook cut the lead in half with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning, but a two-out double by Mendoza and an RBI single by Hrustich made it 3-1 and provided some much-needed insurance.
The Seawolves added a run with a pair of two-out hits in the seventh, but Winburn sealed the victory with a shutout to strand the tying run.
Delaware will remain at home for a midweek matchup against Delaware State in the Route 1 Rivalry. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 4 p.m. at Delaware Softball Stadium.
Notes
Winburn's second strikeout of the game in the top of the fourth inning was the 300th strikeout of her career, making her just the fifth Blue Hen to reach the milestone … Hanna Garber's run scored in the bottom of the fourth was the 150th of her career as she becomes just the second UD player to reach that mark and is just seven away from tying the program record … Stony Brook's earned run in the seventh inning snapped Winburn's streak of 26.1 innings without allowing an earned run. She had gone 35.0-consecutive innings in CAA play without allowing an earned run.
