PHILADELPHIA – Delaware baseball (24-25, 13-11 CAA) dropped a midweek contest late at Penn (26-14, 13-5 Ivy League) 10-9 on Wednesday.
Delaware got off to a hot start as reigning CAA Player of the Week JJ Freeman roped a double into the gap to put the visitors up one.
The Quakers put up three unearned runs in the bottom of the first against first-time starter Christian Colmery, but led briefly, as Freeman once again came through, walloping his third grand slam of the season deep beyond the right-field fence to give Delaware a 5-3 lead.
Penn once again tied it up, but Joey Loynd smacked a double into the gap to score two and Josearmando Diaz drove in a run to make it 8-5.
Dan Covino had a run-scoring fielders choice to boost the lead to four in the fifth.
Despite this, Penn once again answered back to tie it at nine.
Anthony Gubitosi and Carter Welch combined for three scoreless innings in relief, matching zeroes with the Penn bullpen.
In the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff hit by pitch was chased home by a walk-off double to seal the victory for Penn.
Freeman's three hits led the way, while Bryce Greenly, Loynd and Covino joined him with multiple hits.
Delaware will host Towson next for a three-game set beginning on Friday, the final home series of the season.
