Baseball Sails to Senior Day Win Over Towson
5/13/2023 10:01:00 PM | Baseball
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (25-26, 14-12 CAA) honored its seniors in the best way possible, earning an 8-5 win on Saturday over Towson (17-35, 5-21) and keeping pace in the conference standings.
"It was a much-needed win," head coach Greg Mamula said. "It gives us the opportunity to win the series tomorrow which is what we need to do. It should be a fun game tomorrow."
Delaware started the fireworks early as Joey Loynd blasted a solo shot to left in the first inning. Towson answered back with a home run in the top of the second.
After this, baseball began flying out of Bob Hannah Stadium in the bottom half of the inning, as Andrew Amato clubbed a three-run shot and Aidan Kane followed with a solo home run. Towson chipped in another solo homer in the top of the third.
Kane scored an unorthodox run in the fourth, coming home from second on a throw back to the pitcher that went into center field to extend the lead to three.
The Hens left the bases loaded in three consecutive innings and Joey Silan ran into trouble in the seventh, as Towson chased home three runs to knot the game at five all.
Loading the bases again in the seventh, Delaware finally came through, as Loynd drove in a run on a sac fly, Tyler Leach scored on a wild pitch and JJ Freeman blooped a single into no man's land in center to make it 8-5.
Anthony Gubitosi came in and once again fired two scoreless innings, fanning a career-best four batters to earn his first career save, blowing the doors off the Tigers. He has now allowed just one earned run over his last 13 appearances.
"I've been sticking to a regimen and coming out every day working hard and coming early to practices," Gubitosi said. "Overall, just being consistent. Coach Kulina and Coach Wakeley have been a huge help and I give thanks to all of them, I've just felt great out there."
Amato, Kane and Bryce Greenly recorded multiple hits, while Silan struck out eight in seven innings.
The series will be decided in a rubber match on Sunday, the final home game of the season.
